Editorial Reviews
Review
"As an avid reader, I found this book to be
highly enjoyable. Mrs. Tyler seems to have captured
what it must be like to be a gay man living with
AIDS in a fundamentalist society."
-- Mike Myrick, pastor from Nashville
"And You Invited Me In is a powerful
story of unconditional love and grace. This story
grabbed me and reminded me of all the emotional
roads that...gays and lesbians experience every
day.... I wept as I recalled the many people who
have crossed our paths in ministry who are the
Scotts, Alexes, Annies, and Samuels. It is my prayer
that God will use this real-life story to break all
our hearts and cause us...to realize what really
matters in life."
-- Todd Ferrell, president of The Evangelical
Network
Book Description
When Alex Marshall left his stifling small town
behind, he felt freedom for the first time in his
life. Rejected by his conservative Christian
hometown for his homosexuality, Alex becomes a
successful lawyer, active in the gay community and
committed to his partner, Scott. But tragedy strikes
in the form of AIDS, as it rips away Alex's dignity
and crushes his body. He is near the end of his
life.
Annie Whitley, Alex's sister, is faced with a
difficult choice when a call from Alex comes out of
the blue. Should she travel to care for her
estranged brother -- who represents the lifestyle
she's been taught to hate and fear -- or stay away,
deny him, and follow what the town demands? Choosing
Alex, she begins to see how her decision impacts the
entire community.
And You Invited Me In addresses the moral
dilemma that many face: how can people accept or
even tolerate a way of life so different from
anything they have been taught to believe is
acceptable? This interwoven tale speaks of love,
compassion, and true belief, as a family reconciles
and a town comes to understand the truth of its
faith, and is resonant with the hymn of equality.
For I was hungry and you gave me something
to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.
-- Matthew 25:35

Book Description
At sixteen, Lance Bass received a phone call from
Justin Timberlake that would change his life
forever. Soon after, he left his small-town home
in Clinton, Mississippi, to join an emerging
musical group called *NSYNC. Two years later *NSYNC
was inspiring Beatles-esque mania around the
world, becoming the face of the new MTV
generation, and earning the all-time record for
most album sales in a single day (more than one
million) and in a single week for No Strings
Attached.
He's remained in the spotlight ever since, and
here he talks in depth for the first time about
his childhood, his astonishing experiences as a
young man and Christian growing up in one of the
biggest bands in the world, his shock and
frustration at the band's eventual dissolution,
and his subsequent career, including his four
months in Russia, training to become a cosmonaut.
He also frankly discusses life as a gay man --
his first same-sex relationship at twenty-one, his
struggle to keep his sexuality hidden from *NSYNC's
fans in case it jeopardized the band's success,
and the true circumstances that led to his
decision to publicly come out at the age of
twenty-seven.
Full of fascinating behind-the-scenes lore and
revealing insights from a pop star who, until now,
has been notoriously private, Out of Sync
is the book that millions of fans have been
waiting for.

Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers
of the Christian Right [BARGAIN PRICE] (Hardcover)
by Mel
White (Author)

Editorial
Reviews
Book Description
The bestselling author of Stranger at the Gate
provides an inside exposé of the Christian
Right's agenda-and a playbook in how to resist it.
This Fall's midterm elections will see much
discussion about the enhanced power of the
Christian fundamentalist Right, leaving many
people to wonder: just who are these people and
what exactly do they want? What are their ultimate
goals? The Reverend Mel White, a deeply religious
man who sees fundamentalism as "evangelical
Christian orthodoxy gone cultic," believes
that it is not a stretch to say that the true goal
of today's fundamentalists is to break down the
wall that separates church and state, superimpose
their "moral values" on the U.S.
Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic
rule, and ultimately create a new "Christian
America" in their image. White's new book, Religion
Gone Bad, is a wake-up call to all of us to
take heed.
White is singularly qualified to write this exposé
of the Christian Right because he himself was a
true believer who served the evangelical movement
as pastor, professor, filmmaker, television
producer, author, and ghostwriter for such
fundamentalist leaders as Pat Robertson, Jerry
Falwell, and Billy Graham, all of whom he got to
know well. As he writes, "These are not just
Neocons dressed in religious drag. These men see
themselves as gurus called by God to rescue
America from unrighteousness. They believe this is
a Christian nation that must be returned forcibly
to its Christian roots."
He is also a gay man, who made news when he came
out more than twelve years ago. White has gained a
unique understanding of the fundamentalist agenda
because, since the fall of "godless
Communism," homosexuality and abortion have
become the primary targets through which
fundamentalists have created fear, raised money,
and mobilized recruits. Religion Gone Bad
documents the thirty-year war that fundamentalist
Christians have waged against homosexuality and
gays and lesbians and offers dramatic,
heartbreaking evidence that fundamentalist
leaders-Protestant and Catholic alike-are waging
nothing less than a "holy war" (jihad)
against sexual minorities. By focusing on the
current plight of gay people in this country,
White addresses the wider issue that
fundamentalist Christianity-like fundamentalist
Islam-has become a threat not just to gays, but to
all Americans who disagree with fundamentalist
Christian "values." --This text

edition.
About the Author
Mel White leads the charge against Christian
fundamentalism in America. A former ghostwriter,
consultant, and confidant to figures such as Jerry
Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Oliver North, White
famously broke with the Christian Right in the
1990s, coming out as a gay man and writing his
popular memoir, Stranger at the Gate. White
lives with his partner in Lynchburg,
Virginia-across the street from Jerry Falwell's
church. --This text refers to the Hardcover
edition.

Review
"With candor, conviction, and compassion,
Alex Sanchez dramatizes the plight of teens who
struggle to balance their homosexuality and
their deeply felt religious beliefs. An
important, heartfelt book that deserves a wide
readership."
-- Michael Cart, editor of Love & Sex:
Ten Stories of Truth
"Alex Sanchez evokes the crucifying
experience of adolescents wrestling with their
sexual identity and their identity as
Christians. This book is a gift not just to
teenagers, but to those who love and work with
them."
-- The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts
Schori, Presiding Bishop and
Primate, the Episcopal Church
Book Description
How could I choose betwen my sexuality and my
spirituality, two of the most important parts
that made me whole?
High school senior Paul has dated Angie since
middle school, and they're good together. They
have a lot of the same interests, like singing
in their church choir and being active in Bible
club. But when Manuel transfers to their school,
Paul has to rethink his life. Manuel is the
first openly gay teen anyone in their small town
has ever met, and yet he says he's also a
committed Christian. Talking to Manuel makes
Paul reconsider thoughts he has kept hidden, and
listening to Manuel's interpretation of Biblical
passages on homosexuality causes Paul to
reevaluate everything he believed. Manuel's
outspokenness triggers dramatic consequences at
school, culminating in a terrifying situation
that leads Paul to take a stand.
Lambda Literary Award-winning author Alex
Sanchez tackles a subject ripped from the
headlines in this exciting and thought-provoking
exploration of what it means to be both
religious and gay.

Straight to Jesus: Sexual and Christian Conversions
in the Ex-Gay Movement (Paperback)
by Tanya
Erzen (Author)
Editorial
Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This is ethnography at its
best: an outsider's careful, respectful
translation of a subculture that is often poorly
understood and easily dismissed in academic and
political discourse. In this case, the subculture
is religious conservatives who believe that
homosexuality is a choice to be overcome. Erzen,
an assistant professor of comparative studies at
Ohio State University, spent a year of intensive
dissertation fieldwork in 2000 with a residential
program in the ex-gay movement called New Hope.
The ministry caters to men, usually from
conservative Christian backgrounds, who struggle
with a deeply felt contradiction between their
sexual desires and their religious convictions.
Erzen argues that most analysis of the ex-gay
movement has failed to grasp the powerful role of
religion, and how many homosexuals yearn to
reconcile sexuality and faith. Her study puts
complex human faces on this small piece of the
ex-gay movement while at the same time providing a
well-researched backdrop for where the ministry
fits into ongoing debates. She has terrific
chapters on the history of the ex-gay movement,
the nature/nurture debate around homosexuality and
the discourse of addiction that undergirds much of
the ex-gay movement. Her book is likely to become
a staple for college courses on political
discourse, religion and sexuality. (June)
